Akihiro – you are my autumn hero!

Akihiro – you are my autumn hero!

Difficult to spell your name? That´s a huge advantage!

My name is a challenge to all my new relations – all three names are tricky!

First the names are pronounced funny – Dorte sounds like daughter, and has during the years given me some good laughs, while Krüger Molin are just tricky to pronounce, if you are not Danish, Swedish or German.

It is just as tricky to spell the names; Dorte is without an h, Krüger is with a German ü and Molin is spelled the Swedish way – not the French.

Now why am I telling you this? Because it´s a huge advantage!

Most people forget names fast, if they only hear them ones. When your names are tricky, you have a much better chance of being remembered.

Why?

Most people want to get your name right, so when names are pronounced differently or are tricky to spell, you will receive questions about your names – and that is a gift. Now you have the chance to tell stories about your name, and that will increase the chance of being remembered significantly.

As sales specialist, I am attending a lot of events and fairs – places where you meet many people during a short period of time. Like most people, I also want to remember new relations, so I am not only telling stories about my own name, but also the names I am introduced to.

Let me share one of them with you; in Singapore, I was introduced to a Japanese man with a very special name; Akihiro. For a Danish woman, Japanese names are in general tricky, as they are so different from the names in the Scandinavian countries, but when I make connection from the name, to something I can relate to – when I tell a story, I am able to remember even the trickiest.

Aki means autumn in Japanese and Hiro is almost the same as hero, so I said:

"You are my autumn hero!"

Autumn the same year we had become business partners. We had installed my product in his company, and the everyday working life for his colleagues had improved a great deal.

By telling the story I was not only helping myself to remember his name – I was also much easier for him to remember, even before I told stories about my name :)

Therefore; turn tricky names into storytelling and be memorable.

Happy storytelling and a great day to you!
