Be the One People Remember

Have you analyzed the people everyone talk about? The people that we remember and keep bringing up in conversations, so we keep remembering them?

A beautiful day in May I attended a conference in Copenhagen. It was in a brand-new building with smart doors – too smart for a lot of us, because it was tricky to find our way in :) The first person on stage did also find it challenging to enter this morning, and that was the first he talked about, when he got on stage. He got our attention! And we had a great laugh together.

After the show I thought; Wow what a speech! It is several years ago, and I still remember him!

Have you thought about what they do – these great speakers? What makes them memorable and popular?

Actually, it is not that complicated…

I know… that is a wild assertion;

But I didn’t say easy – just not that complicated.

I see three elements:

1.       Jump onboard

2.       Tell a fairy tale

3.       Mention objections

Jump Onboard

It is difficult to sail together if you are not on board the ship.

Before you reveal your great points and valuable knowledge you need to connect to your audience – hop onboard.

Otherwise, your audience will sail toward the horizons while you will be left at the port.

Your words will be wasted!

Therefore;

·       Know your audience

·       Find the connection and connect

·       Built up your Ethos – why you are relevant

To listen with interest, we need to feel connected – to be in the same boat. It must be relevant to us.

We need to share the same enthusiasm and the same challenges – think about the smart doors :)

We want an adventure together, being connected in the same boat is the foundation for that - so invest time in this.

Tell a Fairy Tale

About the Customer – not about you!

Choose your goal/morality – you can´t cover all your points in one story.

Think about how you were captured as a child when you were told fairy tales.

Create a world that is black and white – I know it isn’t, but in your pitch story or speech it is.

Include our senses in your story.

·       Taste

·       Smell

·       Feel

·       See

·       Hear

To connect with the story we need to taste, smell, feel, see and hear the story in connection with our own experiences – and we are able to do so, when we stimulate the senses.

People remember stories – not facts. And the reason for that is especially due to the fact that we connect stories to our own experiences – and then it is actually our own stories that help us remember the new story.

Therefore: Built up your speeches and pitches like a great fairy tale.

And remember: Pathos and ethos are great companions to logos – see blog post about that.

Mention objections

We all have objections when introduced to new ideas. And we think about them – during being pitched to :)

To have your audience’s full attention – acknowledge you know they have objections and doubt that this will be beneficial for them. Often you already know their worries.

People have objections no matter if you mention them or not. If you address them before the audients have the first thought about them – the objections lose their power. If not – you risk, they will grow strong.

So, to be the one that people remember, you need to:

1.       Jump onboard

2.       Tell a fairy tale

3.       Mention objections
