Have You Learned from Your Holiday Reading?

During my holiday I enjoyed “The Pearl Sister” by Lucinda Riley – exciting to the last page!

Now this is not a book review, but rather a reflection of how we can learn from the techniques used in novels.

I think that her techniques can be transferred to professional presentations and speeches – yes, I really think so! And what does fiction have to do with professional presentations?

Both are about creating curiosity and excitement throughout the book – or speech.

One technique I have particularly adopted is to build the story from several perspectives that meet in beautiful harmony at the end.

Excitement and curiosity are built up because you hear about several worlds and time periods that have a lot in common, but where the connection is not obvious until the end.

In professional presentations, the storytelling is often missing, and the information comes primarily in chronological order – this can easily result in inactive listeners. And the reason for this is that we do not stimulate imagination and curiosity when we list up facts.

With stories we speak to the senses, so that the imagination unfolds within the audience - they relate the story to their own experiences.

And If we tell stories from several perspectives that finally meet at the end, we keep the listener excited until the last word of the speech...

It is not an easy method, but done right - it is a real pleasure to be the listener - I was very entertained in the deck chair in the company of the "Pearl Sister"!

What have you learned from your holiday? I am curious, so please share in the comments!
